Eyes of Gold

Selected by Malika Favre

Eyes of Gold

In 'Eyes of Gold', we invite some of our favourite tastemakers with a golden eye to select three works from the Bisou collection. Each guest explains their choices and shares how these pieces might live together in their space.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a French artist based in Barcelona, who can’t resist crisp lines and unapologetic colours, always trying to tell stories with as few lines as possible.

When I’m not drawing, I moonlight as a curator for I Can’t Afford This But Maybe She Can, where I get to celebrate independent brands and talented makers. Less is More when it comes to my artistic approach, More is More when it comes to decorating my house.

    Malika's 1st pick

You’ve selected three works from Bisou, what drew you to each?

    Maria Bodil, 'Homage 6'

I just adore the strength of the composition and the perfect balance of shapes and colours. There is something extremely sensual and empowering about this piece.

    Malika's 2nd and 3th pick

Kumi Sugaï, 'Signal C' & 'Soleil Vert'

I have been daydreaming about having a Kumi Sugaï piece for years (as you well know Julien) so I would pick my favourite duo, Signal C and Soleil Vert.

I love how these two pieces contrast each other, one is soft and warm, the other structured and almost Mathematical. They are perfect cousins.

    Art in context

Would you display these together, or would they live in different spaces?

I would display the Sugaï pieces together on a large coloured wall, opening a visual dialogue. They would surely feel too lonely on their own.

Maria Bodil would get her own wall though, gracing a slightly hidden corner of the house, ready to be discovered by my guests when looking for their coat on their way out.

    Ask the artist

Is there a piece from this selection you'd love to ask the artist a question about?

It would have to be Maria Bodil. What/Who is she looking at?

We hadn’t really thought about this question before, but looking at the image now, the textured background gives the impression of a painting, with the women quietly taking in the piece. She might even be an artist herself, facing a work of her own. However, we like to keep this open to interpretation.
